Chattanooga is located in the State of Tennessee, USA. It is the fourth largest city within the state following Memphis, Nashville and Knoxville. Chattanooga has a roughly estimated population of 167,674 and is the seat of Hamilton County. Chattanooga is situated on Chickamauga Lake and Nickajack Lake within southeastern Tennessee. These are both portions of the Tennessee River. The city of Chattanooga is located 148 miles or 238 km towards the northeast of Birmingham, within the state of Alabama, 190km or 120 miles southwest of the city of Knoxville, 190km or 120 miles towards the northwest of Atlanta, within the state of Georgia, and 135 miles or 217 km towards the southeast of the city of Nashville. The city abuts the border within the state of Georgia. The area is found at the junction of 3 major interstate highways, the I-24, the I-75 and the I-59.

The city is with the ridge-and-valley part of the Cumberland Plateau and the Appalachian Mountains. Chattanooga has an elevation in the downtown core of about 680 feet or 210 m. "Scenic City" is the official nickname for Chattanooga since is it densely bordered by various mountains and ridges.

The Native American Indians were the very first inhabitants of the Chattanooga area. The very first European people were from expeditions led by Hernando DeSoto of Spain. In 1816, Chattanooga was established at Ross's Landing by John Ross who was Chief of the Cherokee Indians. In the year 1838, the city used the name Chattanooga and the name is taken from Native American origin.
