Clarksville is situated in Tennessee's Montgomery County. It is the 5th biggest city in the entire state of Tennessee and serves as the county seat. The city of Clarksville is the fastest growing city in the entire US with a population of around 133,000 residents based on the latest 2010 census numbers. The city of Clarksville also is the main central city of the TN-KY Clarksville metropolitan statistical area, that comprises Trigg County, Kentucky, Montgomery County, Stewart County, Christian County and Tennessee. This is the 10th fastest MSA or Metropolitan Statistical Area within the nation.
During 1785, the city of Clarksville was the very first incorporated city in the state of Tennessee. The name comes General George Rogers Clark, a Revolutionary War Hero and frontier fighter. He is also brother of William Clark of the Lewis and Clark Expedition.
Clarksville is home to Austin Peay State University. It is one of\among the south's most historic cities. The Leaf-Chronicle, the state's oldest newspaper is also from here. Moreover, the city of Clarksville is neighbor to Fort Campbell, the home of the 101st Airborne Division or Air Assault. This base is situated about 16 km or 10 miles from downtown Clarksville and straddles the state line of Tennessee and Kentucky. Officially it is referred to as Fort Campbell, Kentucky mostly because the base U.S. Post Office is located on the Kentucky side of the base though most of Fort Campbell is actually in Tennessee.
The township was founded during the year 1784, and then later incorporated during the year 1785. It wasn't until the 19th century that the township started to slowly grow and prosper. In time railroads, bridges, new roads and churches and educational institutions were constructed. Clarksville was incorporated as a city in 1855 and in the later part of the century the city developed a broad reputation for its production of dark fired tobacco. The city's economic development was closely tied to the farming business for decades. As the progression of the 20th century came, the County of Montgomery and the city of Clarksville took on an approach that is based more on technology.
The major economic elements of Clarksville include a strong manufacturing industry, a growing hospitality sector, Austin Peay State University and the Fort Campbell Army Post. Other important businesses consist of printing, and manufacturing of air conditioning and heating units. The marketing, farming and processing of tobacco within the area also contributes to Clarksville's economy. The state's biggest employer is Fort Campbell.
